Question

If a student is on Independent Study during an Emergency School Closure, should their attendance also be deleted for the closure day?

Answer
There should be no student attendance marked for the closure day as it is now a non-school day.

How to handle Independent Study attendance coding in the event of an emergency school closure is a district based decision. As present/absent is not recognized for Independent Study students, Independent Study Complete and Incomplete Codes should be evaluated on a case by case basis. Districts may check with their by-laws or CDE for guidance, or Aeries Listserv for suggestions from other districts.

Examples of how Independent Study could be handled in the event of an Emergency School Closure:
  • Independent Study Complete absence code falling on a closure day could be moved to the following school day
  • Independent Study Complete absence code falling on a closure day could be moved to a previous day where work was incomplete
  • Independent Study Contracts expiring or beginning on the closure date need to be re-evaluated
