Security permissions need to be enabled for the Service Learning Administrator (the user approving/denying organizations and logs) and for the Portal Group of Student and/or Parent.
Go to Security > Users (or Security > Groups to set permissions for a group) to enable the Service Learning Administrator’s permissions. Select the applicable security settings from the Service Learning options listed. For a user to edit the Service Learning Coordinator, they need Administer permission to Service Learning Data and Log (SLL). (Service Learning Data (Query Only) is a different row, SLD, used only for queries.) The Service Learning Coordinator's staff ID is stored in SLD.CID. The coordinator is for reference: the approval pages list every pending item for the school, not just the coordinator's students.
The permissions needed for each Service Learning page:
| Page or action | Permission needed |
|---|---|
| Service Learning (student page) | Read on Service Learning Data and Log (SLL); Insert, Update or Delete to add, change or delete recipients and log entries |
| Approve or deny log entries, edit the Service Learning Coordinator, edit other users' log entries | Administer on Service Learning Data and Log (SLL) |
| Svc Lrng Approval | Administer on Service Learning Data and Log (SLL) |
| Svc Lrng Org Approval | Administer on Service Learning Organizations (SLO) |
| Svc Lrng Organizations | Read, Insert, Update or Delete on Service Learning Organizations (SLO) |
| Svc Lrng Requirements | Read or Update on Service Learning Requirements |
| Select Service Learning Areas button (assign a student's areas) | Update on Service Learning Hours (SLH) |

Go to Security > Portal Groups and select the Students group. Grant Read on Service Learning Organizations (SLO) and Read and Insert (and optionally Update and Delete) on Service Learning Data and Log (SLL). The Service Learning menu items only display in the portal when Read on SLO is granted. Portal users can never add, change or delete Service Learning Organizations, whatever their SLO permissions.
Parents can also be given access. If parents are given Insert on SLL, hours they log are saved as Parent hours and count toward the area's Maximum Parent Contributed Hours.
